Compounds in mate tea kills cancer cells | ScienceBlog.com

Could preventing colon cancer be as simple as developing a taste for yerba mate tea? In a recent University of Illinois study, scientists showed that human colon cancer cells die when they are exposed to the approximate number of bioactive compounds present in one cup of this brew, which has long been consumed in South America for its medicinal properties.

?The caffeine derivatives in mate tea not only induced death in human colon cancer cells, they also reduced important markers of inflammation,? said Elvira de Mejia, a U of I associate professor of food chemistry and food toxicology.

That?s important because inflammation can trigger the steps of cancer progression, she said.

In the in vitro study, de Mejia and former graduate student Sirima Puangpraphant isolated, purified, and then treated human colon cancer cells with caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) derivatives from mate tea. As the scientists increased the CQA concentration, cancer cells died as a result of apoptosis.

?Put simply, the cancer cell self-destructs because its DNA has been damaged,? she said.

The ability to induce apoptosis, or cell death, is a promising tactic for therapeutic interventions in all types of cancer, she said.

de Mejia said they were able to identify the mechanism that led to cell death. Certain CQA derivatives dramatically decreased several markers of inflammation, including NF-kappa-B, which regulates many genes that affect the process through the production of important enzymes. Ultimately cancer cells died with the induction of two specific enzymes, caspase-3 and caspase-8, de Mejia said.

?If we can reduce the activity of NF-kappa-B, the important marker that links inflammation and cancer, we?ll be better able to control the transformation of normal cells to cancer cells,? she added.

The results of the study strongly suggest that the caffeine derivatives in mate tea have potential as anti-cancer agents and could also be helpful in other diseases associated with inflammation, she said.

But, because the colon and its microflora play a major role in the absorption and metabolism of caffeine-related compounds, the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects of mate tea may be most useful in the colon.

?We believe there?s ample evidence to support drinking mate tea for its bioactive benefits, especially if you have reason to be concerned about colon cancer. Mate tea bags are available in health food stores and are increasingly available in large supermarkets,? she added.

The scientists have already completed and will soon publish the results of a study that compares the development of colon cancer in rats that drank mate tea as their only source of water with a control group that drank only water.

This in vitro study was published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, vol. 55, pp. 1509-1522, in 2011. Co-authors include Sirima Puangpraphant, now an assistant professor at Kasetsart University in Thailand; Greg Potts, an undergraduate student of the U of I; and Mark A. Berhow and Karl Vermillion of the USDA, ARS, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, Illinois. The work was funded by the U of I Research Board and Puangpraphant?s Royal Thai Government Scholarship.

Google Maps indoor navigation: yeah, it works at CES

Google Maps 6.0 brought a promise of indoor navigation back in November of last year, but outside of a few dozen airports, transit hubs and retail outlets, we had no idea where it was or wasn't implemented. Turns out, Google (smartly) mapped out lots of Las Vegas before the annual Consumer Electronics Show, as many of our contemporaries have pointed out over at The Sands and Venetian. We also confirmed that indoor mapping worked here at CES Unveiled, and given the dearth of wireless connectivity inside most of Vegas' frequented locales, it's certainly a blessing that we'll be taking advantage of.

Collector Car Insurance ? Techsumi

A collector, vintage or antique car holder is bound to feel unique, and compared to ordinary or normal cars that we use on a daily basis, such cars are generally expensive.Consequently, most folks are under the impression that collector car insurance would be always expensive as compared to ordinary car insurance. However, this fact is not always true. There are selected companies present in the market that offer collector car insurance, and a surprising aspect is that many of them offer schemes whose premium is actually less as compared to ordinary car insurance. However, collector car insurance depends on multiple factors. Furthermore, certain restrictions or limitations, along with limited coverage, are likely to be imposed by the insurance vendor or firm.

In the event of any form of damage or accident, repairs to collector cars could be extremely expensive. Consequently, it comes as no surprise if a selective attitude is adopted by insurance firms that specialize in collector car insurance. However, collector cars are not driven on a day to day basis by most people who possess them, so the insurance premiums of such collector cars could be less owing to their stationary life. There are certain firms that do not provide regular coverage for daily usage, but restrict their collector car insurance for the car to be displayed at exhibitions or events. Some special collector car insurance scheme may cover only certain miles on a yearly basis for which the collector car can be driven.

Nowadays; competitive insurance rates are being looked for by most applicants.Car insurance is not an area where any applicant would like to spare extra money. There can be no better place than the web to search for appropriate car insurance schemes.Online car insurance enables applicants to compare rates from different insurance vendors with just a few clicks. An applicant is effectively saved from the trouble of dealing with insurance agents, or roaming from one dealer to another in search of best deal.Effectively, an applicant saves a lot of time while availing competitive rates with online car insurance.

Online car insurance enables prospective policy holders to take help from premium calculators that are generally found on all insurance sites these days.Premium calculators enable an applicant to calculate the premium amount for a given car insurance scheme. An applicant can thus determine if the online car insurance scheme fits his budget before actually applying for it.

Car insurance quotes online are generally available for free from most vendors.Effective quote comparison is indeed required to get the best deals out of online car insurance.

Griffin Studio Connect, Midi Connect hands-on (video)

Griffin really loves Garageband music makers, so much in fact that it's releasing two new devices to help budding Mantovanis do all their composing on their iPads. The Midi Connect has an Apple dock connector on one end and a MIDI-in and MIDI-out interface on the other. The Studio Connect is a more muscular iPad dock that'll let you control any instrument that runs MIDI or a quarter-inch lead. There's a physical gain control rocker, blue-glowing volume switch and you can either push out sound to its stereo AV output or a 3.5mm headphone jack. Both devices will arrive in "Spring:" the Midi Connect going for $80, the Studio Connect setting you back $150.

Dana Murph contributed to this report.

`X Factor' winner still has dreams of nursing (AP)

NEW YORK ? She's got a $5 million recording contract, but Melanie Amaro still sees herself as a nurse someday.

The 19-year-old was studying nursing in college before her winning run on Fox's "The X Factor." Although she's just signed a deal with Epic Records and is about to start working on her debut album, she said she still wants to pursue the field of nursing at some point.

"To be honest, I still do want to do nursing because I want to help people," she said in an interview Wednesday. "But I think as of right now I want to pursue what I absolutely love, which is my singing first. ... I'll just probably take classes while I'm on the road or something. I don't know. Whatever comes my way."

If her singing career takes off like she did on "The X Factor," she'll likely never get the chance. Amaro won the talent competition last month on the strength of her big voice and ballad-style singing. But Amaro says people shouldn't expect just slow, anthemlike songs on her debut.

"I'll still have the big ballads, but then I'm hoping to throw something out there that fans won't expect so they'll be like, `Oh my God, there's like different stages of her or different like genres that she can do,'" says the Sunrise, Fla., resident. "So I can do lots of different types of genres of music and I wasn't able to show that a lot on the show, but I'll hopefully be able to do that on the album."

She'll be working on her album with L.A. Reid, the "X Factor" judge who is also chairman and CEO of Epic Records. Although Simon Cowell was her official mentor on the show, she said Reid always gave her confidence.

"(He said) trust my voice. ... He always told me like, `Girl, you can sing. You can sing. You really can sing.' He was like, `I believe in you,'" she recalled. "Just to hear words like that from L.A. Reid ... that's really big for me, you know."

Her album is set to be released this year.

Occupy the Rose Bowl Parade: Protesters gearing up to march behind the roses

About 300 Occupy protesters have been given permission to march at the end of the Rose Parade on Monday in Pasadena, Calif. But the protesters don't have an official float.

Will a marquee New Year?s event be advanced or marred by the inclusion of protesters?

On Monday, Occupy demonstrators will march at the tail end of the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif. About 300 have been given permission to march the entire route, although not as an official float.

The parade, sociologists say, is one of the last bastions of American community: The event will be seen by an estimated 50 million television viewers, as well as the 700,000 that line the parade route. Adding protesters to a tradition that furthers togetherness has become a source of debate.

Some say the demonstrators, freshly ousted from tent encampments all over the United States, will drag down the image of one of the most cautious and conservative events in the country. They say that people don?t want real-world politics intruding on a day in which families can put aside mundane cares and simply have fun.

?Once you allow a group like OWS [Occupy Wall Street] into an iconic event like this, you risk changing the entire focus of it for everyone. Where does it stop?? asks David Johnson, an Atlanta-based media analyst. ?Will it just become a parade of causes ? Planned Parenthood, the tea party, presidential campaigns? I think Americans are tired of politics 24/7.?

But others say inclusion of the protesters will be a refreshing advance toward relevance ? and thus more serious audiences ? for the parade, which they say is otherwise mostly a feel-good marketing campaign for corporations, chambers of commerce, and civic groups.

?This makes the Rose Parade more relevant,? says Barbara O?Connor, director emeritus of the Institute for the Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento. ?This way, they are at least addressing what many of their viewers are feeling.?

For the protesters, she says, inclusion is nothing short of a coup. ?With this move, the OWS movement moves from ?storming? to ?norming? ? moving from agitating on the outside to being on the inside of one of America?s most established norms.?

This is not the first time that people have been allowed to march peacefully after the parade. Other groups have included animal-rights protesters and religious sects predicting the end of the world. Anti-Vietnam protesters showed up along the parade route in the 1970s, and in the ?90s, civil rights activists highlighted the lack of minorities on the parade?s governing board.

One year, demonstrators protested the use of a descendant of Christopher Columbus as grand marshal, unveiling a sign that said, ?500 years of genocide.?

?One thing we want the public to be clear on is that we have not given these people a [parade] permit,? says Lt. Phlunte Etou Riddle, spokeswoman for the Pasadena Police Department. ?I?ve been doing this for 28 years, and lots of causes and people with political agendas have tried to elbow their way into national attention. We give them this spot that is officially not in the parade.?

Based on past experience with the Occupy movement, which underwent more than 700 arrests early on in New York and has had clashes with police in other cities from Florida to California ? organizers are trying to allay fears of unrest in Pasadena. Precautions include readiness from local, state, and federal law enforcement.

Beyond that, Occupy activists have themselves trained 40 volunteers who will be outfitted in colored vests to urge marchers to be calm.

Although the Occupy protesters will not have a rolling float, they will instead carry a giant, ?people-powered? octopus (to symbolize corporate greed), which they got from a film production studio. And they will carry blowups of the Constitution with the words, ?We the People? and ?We the Corporations.?

?The Rose Parade officials have been awesome to us,? says Lisa Clapier, lead spokeswoman for a Los Angeles group of Occupy protesters. Both sides have hinted that they are concerned about outside agitators causing problems.

The Rose Parade isn?t the only big event that Occupy protesters have descended upon recently. ?Occupy the Caucuses? has been organized ahead of Iowa?s Jan. 3 vote for a GOP presidential nominee. Protesters have stationed themselves outside campaign offices, including the state Democratic Party headquarters. Police have arrested a number of protesters.

Piggybacking on the Rose Parade could be beneficial. "The choice of the venue ? the Rose Bowl parade ? will afford Occupy good media coverage without being co-opted by the mainstream media and the need to raise advertising dollars to spread their message,? says political science professor Catherine Wilson, who conducts research on social movements at Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

Gordon Coonfield, a communication professor at Villanova University, sees pros and cons for the protesters? use of a parade venue.

?On one hand, it beats being pepper-sprayed, dragged off the streets and jailed,? he writes in an e-mail. ?On the other hand, such [official] sanctioning might suggest the Occupy movement is now on the same level as Disney ... and any other group or corporation marching in the parade or sponsoring floats.?

Fisker Karma recall is official, 239 cars will need their battery packs swapped

The folks at Fisker are probably more excited to see the calendar roll over than anyone, as a tumultuous 2011 comes to an and with another setback for the Karma. A battery issue previously thought to affect around 50 cars will actually result in the recall of 239. GigaOM points out an NHTSA notice confirming a problem with the positioning of hose clamps on the high-voltage Li-Ion batteries. It could result in said hoses leaking coolant into the battery creating the risk of an electrical short-circuit (still not seeing how this is a bad thing) and fire (oh), which the company will resolve by replacing the batteries. The recall probably covers everyone out there rolling like Walden Schmidt, since the CEO announced December 21st that 225 cars had been shipped and its factory was producing 25 cars per day. Still, assuming the $96k~ price tag isn't an issue, would you really let a little thing like potentially bursting into flames keep you away from such a sleek, smooth handling luxury coupe that puts 657hp of hybrid power at your disposal? Neither would we.

VPN For Business Communications | iBlognDax Directory

When a company starts to expand these days it literally takes on different locations. They have to set up offices in different areas in order for their business to go on as they want it to. If a company fails to expands in that way it finds itself severely hampered.

Once multiple locations of business have been set up all of these would need some form of communication with each other. This form of communication has to be fast, efficient and secure in order for the business to go on as planned.

A VPN or a virtual private network provides a fast and reliable way of communication within a business setting. Through the use of a VPN networks of computers that are separated by great distances can communicate with each other and exchange data.

This type of network communication utilizes a public network such as the Internet in order to hook up the internal network of a company together. It does not utilize a physical connection, instead it uses a virtual connection in order for networks to communicate with each other. This virtual network is very crucial right now.

Since this kind of communication utilizes a public network, one of the most important concern for it is security for those who would like to try it out. This problem is resolved by encrypting the message so that even if it is intercepted it would not be of any use.

Most companies now are thinking and planning on the possibility that they might have to Buy VPN in order to keep their business running. A few years ago they might have no choice but to go for a leased line which can really be quite expensive. Now there is a more affordable alternative.

A VPN opens up doors of new possibilities for a company and its Intranet. They could even start dreaming of utilizing it for home-based workers who are just connected by the network.

Want to find out more about VPN, then visit www.vpnfortress.com on how to choose the best VPN for your needs.
