WINSTON-SALEM -- A family from the Winston-Salem church that had a carbon monoxide scare Wednesday night is speaking about their experience. An ambulance took church secretary Angie Renigar and her two kids to Baptist Hospital after they were overcome by fumes.
This happened just before 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove Moravian Church. Choir practice and a youth meeting were happening inside when the gas caused more than a dozen people, including children, to feel nauseous and light headed.
It turns out a clogged chimney was the culprit.
"The firemen were here checking the carbon monoxide levels all over the church, and the church is huge, so they were everywhere and they found really high concentrations in the classroom where we were," said Renigar. "They didn't indicate anything that was particularly dangerous in the sanctuary where the choir was singing, so those folks were OK."
The church installed multiple carbon monoxide detectors Thursday.
